Petition Signing FAQs
1. Why do we have to sign this petition? Tonya Sweat is running for County Executive as an independent or unaffiliated candidate. There is no primary election for independent candidates. Signing the petition allows Tonya to be certified as a candidate for the November 3, 2026 general election.
2. What makes Tonya the best candidate? She is a litigating attorney, USAF veteran (former judge advocate), and former federal banking regulator. She is an advocate for seniors and children, and she cares about Prince George’s County. She has integrity and will govern the County for OUR best interests.
3. How many signatures are needed? The goal is 15,000 signatures.
4. When are the signatures due? Tonya hopes to submit the petitions to the Board of Elections by May 31, 2026.
5. What does signing the petition mean? By signing, you give Tonya permission to be on the November 3, 2026 ballot.
6. Does signing the petition change my voter registration? No, except the Board of Elections might update your mailing address using the information on the petition.
7. Do I have to be an independent or unaffiliated voter to sign the petition? No. You only have to be a registered voter in Prince George’s County.
8. Can I sign the petition if I live in Montgomery County or the District of Columbia? You can, but it will not count towards Tonya’s certification.
9. How old do I have to be to sign the petition? 17, as long as you turn 18 by November 3, 2026.
10. Do I have to be a registered voter to sign the petition? Yes.
11. If I can’t sign the petition, can I still support Tonya? Yes. You can volunteer to help gather signatures or donate at tonyasweat.com
